– Sukhram retains crown
It was a simple case of keeping it in the family and more importantly in the same household when 18 year-old Arvinda Kishore dethroned his more illustrious brother Avinash Persaud to take the Digicel-sponsored Guyana Open Golf Tournament which ended yesterday, at the Lusignan Course.
However, there was no such changing of the guard in the Ladies segment as defending champion Christine Sukhran successfully defended her title to engrave her name on the trophy for the seventh time.
Playing off a 5 handicap, Kishore ended the tournament with a total gross 151 and a 141 net to hold off Patrick Persaud, who finished with a aggregate gross of 153 and a net 137 playing off an 8 handicap, while last year’s champion Avinash Persaud closed the day with a total 153 gross and a 147 net from a 3 handicap to occupy the third spot.
In the Ladies Division, Sukhram topped the field in both the total gross and net aggregates after registering 151 and 136 respectively to relegate long time rival Joann Deo to the runner-up position, while Shaunella Webster finished third.
Deo ended with a gross of 194 and a net of 150, while Webster closed on a 210 gross and a 144 net.
In the second flight, Roy Cummings was in immaculate form as he dominated the field, placing first overall as well as registering similar results in both the gross and net categories.
Cummings had a gross 162 and a net 140 to emerge champion, while L. Ramsundar with a gross 170 and Colin Ming with a 173 closed out the top three positions.
In the third flight, Esau Shamshudin emerged victorious ahead of K. M. Chung and P. George respectively.
Making presentations to the winners were Digicel Head of Marketing Jacqueline James and Head of Customer Care Sherwin Osbourne.
James spoke of how satisfied the Company was with the large number of entries and implored on young players and those aspiring to get into the game to do so since as she noted an eighteen year-old player defied the odds to beat a strong field that included a number of past champions and many others with vast experience.
Also giving remarks were Parliamentarian Ronald Bulkan and former Guyana and West Indies cricketer Joe Solomon, who participated in the two-day tournament.
