– Cultural pageant on agenda
The Ministry of Tourism has launched the inaugural Leguan Night, an event which is billed for November 9th, and which also includes a cultural pageant.
The Planning Committee has promised that both islanders and visitors alike can expect an event that is by far the best that the island has ever hosted.
During the launching, Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Mr. Indranauth Haralsingh lauded the organizers for their vision and steadfast efforts towards ensuring that the activity will be staged successfully at the Greens Park Ground, Blenheim.
Organizers are anticipating that thousands will flock the small island.
He explained that among other things, the night of events will focus on cultural attractions such as beach activities, island tours, and opportunities for camping.
It would commence with the beach sports such as volleyball and cricket, and will culminate in the evening with the much anticipated pageant where nine delegates will be competing for the title of Miss Leguan 2013.
Their platforms range from Pollution, Peer Pressure, Domestic Violence, Teenage Pregnancy, Juvenile Delinquency, Women Empowerment, Rights of the Child and Child Abuse, to Unemployment in Leguan.
Musical satisfaction will be provided by the Shakti Strings Orchestra.
Food and drinks would be on sale at Greens Park Ground, and the other attractions would include an exhibition of the products made on the island.
Another highlight will be the island tours which will showcase the rich cultural facets of Leguan, including the St. Peter’s Anglican Church which has been in existence since 1855.
Haralsingh noted that the Ministry of Tourism is planning to lend continuous support to community based activities, with the intention of creating sustainable events which will benefit not only the economy of the communities, but the country as a whole.
“We continue in our efforts to promote domestic tourism and afford all Guyanese the opportunity to see their country and experience the various cultural nuances that define each community,” Haralsingh emphasized.
Leguan is a small island in the Essequibo River constituting primarily rice farming and cattle rearing communities, and is home to approximately 4,000.
The neighbouring island of Wakenaam held its fifth event last year. The Guyana Tourism Authority is hoping that the Leguan Night would garner the interests of people from all walks of life who would want to return to the island, boosting its tourism.
