Scrabble players will convene this morning to battle for honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) stages the Diwali Open competition at the Malteenoes Sports Club Thomas Lands and once again Abigail McDonald is set to cart off the spoils.
However, while this morning’s tournament is expected to provide the usual keen rivalry, the executive will also focus on McDonald’s sojourn to the World Scrabble Championships from 4 – 8 December, 2013, in Prague, Czech Republic. To this effect, a representative of Fly Jamaica Airlines will journey to the venue following the conclusion of the tournament to hand over an airline ticket to the scrabble queen for the return leg of the Guyana/New York portion of the journey.
McDonald retained her crown after placing among the top two in the National Championships earlier this year. She then went on to defeat Gafoor, the other top runner, 3-0 in the three best of 5 to earn the right to represent Guyana at the imminent championships.
Meanwhile, the executives are beseeching the support of the public as they continue in their fund raising activities to acquire the requisite $680,000 for the world event which commence with a BBQ and Lime on November 16, also at Malteenoes Sports Ground. Tickets are $1,000 each and can be obtained from Public Relations Officer, Moen Gafoor (600-9568) or any GASP member. Persons desirous of supporting the venture may also visit the Malteenoes Sports Pavilion on any Thursday between 18:00hrs-22:00hrs where the members are engaged in practice sessions. Alternatively, interested persons may log on to GASP Facebook page.
