Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams showed glimpses of his old vintage self when he stormed to an emphatic win in the feature 30-lap race of the 16th annual Troy Humphrey Memorial Cycle Meet held at the Seawall Bandstand yesterday.
With 28-riders facing starters orders in the feature race, Williams did not leave anything to chance as he took command of the contest early in the piece, his teammates ensuring that he was kept untouched at the helm, tactics which would have been lacking in the past but very encouraging for the future of the sport in Guyana.
Such was the dominance of Williams who led from lap five, that he took nine of the ten sprint prizes on offer, the other going to Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) teammate, Alonzo Greaves.
At some points during the race, Continental Cycle Club’s Geron Williams looked threatening but Williams’ teammates ensured that Geron was kept in check. RBC dominated the feature contest, sweeping the top three spots, Williams being followed to the line by Alonzo Greaves and the veteran Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton.
Geron Williams was fourth with the United Bike Shop duo of brothers, Orville and Delroy Hinds closing out the top six spots in that order.
Apart from the attractive prizes that were on offer, close friend of sponsors, the Humphrey’s Bakery and Farm Products family, Gordon Gilhuys rewarded the top four finishers with $5,000 each.
Owner/Manager of Humphrey’s Bakery, George Humphrey expressed gratitude to all the competitors and officials for turning up in their numbers to make the 16th Memorial Meet for his son Troy, a resounding success.
The Special BMX race was won by Sherwin Sampson with Gem Harrison and Alexander Leung second and third respectively.
Top honours in the BMX Open went to Jamal John followed by F. Jackson and Deeraj Garbarran in that order.
The Team Time Trials went to Continental Cycle Club in 8 Minutes 03.27 Seconds ahead of Roraima Bikers Club (8: 05.25) and United Bike Shop (8:05.76).
Hosea Macullay topped the field in the Mountain Bike contest winning from Richard Charles and Stephano Husbands.
Talim Shaw was a winner all the way in the Veterans Undert-50 event, Junior Niles had to settle for the second pace and Ian Jackson, third. The Over-50 showdown went to US based Joelyn Joseph who was trailed by Linden Blackman and Virgil Jones.
The Junior 20-Lap event saw Mario King emerging the winner with Shaquille Agard and Michael Anthony holding down the second and third places. Agard also won three of the six prime prizes with one each for Anthony, King and Slivio Inniss.
