Preparations are in full swing for the recently formed Roberts Champion Boxing Gym (RCBG) first ever Amateur boxing competition to be staged in the Ancient County of Berbice. The gym, which was formed by former national boxing champion Jeff Roberts, has organised a 12 bout card slated for next Saturday 9th of November at the Matthew Allen (Stelling Road) in New Amsterdam Berbice.
It is expected to be a night of fistic fury and Berbicians are expected to come out in their numbers to witness the event as a number of top Amateur boxers from Georgetown and Berbice pit their skills in the night’s encounter dubbed ‘Berbice verses Georgetown.’ Box off time is 18:00 hrs.
Apart from boxers of the RCBG and the Rose Hall Jammers boxing gym of Corentyne the night’s action is also expected to feature fighters from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Harpy Eagle (HE) and Forgotten Youth Foundation.
Among those expected to highlight the 12 bouts card are the three boxers that represented Guyana at the recently concluded inaugural Junior South American Games in Peru; Flyweight Michael April (52kg), Junior Middleweight Travis Fraser(69kg) and Bantamweight Joel Williamson (56kg) all fighting under the banner of the RCBG. Among other top notch boxers expected to show case their skill are Jamal Eastman, Tyrone Lashley, Keon Williams and Albert Thomas.
Coach of the gym and organiser of the event, Jeff Roberts, who is a former national amateur and professional multi weight boxing champion, stated that preparations are moving smoothly and his charges are ready to represent their turf. Roberts is on a mission to take the sport back to the heights it once reached in years gone by.
The RCBG has over 20 young boxers who are all aiming to make it big and are eager to showcase their skills. The training base is the People National Congress (PNC) building at Strand and St Magdalene Street in New Amsterdam.
According to coordinator Roberts, he is hoping to make it an annual affair while seeking to promote other cards as often as possible at different locations so as to keep the boxers active and interested. He said that he will gage his next activity at the conclusion of this card.
Roberts also stated that the event is being promoted to help in promoting the sport in Berbice. He said that “If we don’t keep activity for these boxers then, we run the risk of them losing some of what they are being taught.”
Meanwhile, Roberts is still appealing to the business community to come forward and help to make the encounter a success. He noted that Berbicians have always staked a claim in the boxing arena. He mentioned such names as Al Thomas, who holds the distinction of sparring a few rounds with the legendary Mohammed Ali when he visited Guyana years ago, Howard ‘the Battersea Bomber’ Eastman who fought three times for the world title, himself, Robin ‘The Albion Prince’ Lall and the late Ramesh Best, among some of those who would have performed with some distinction.
Among those expected to be at ring side are Regional Chairman David Armogan, Mayor Claude Henry and former Mayor and boxing buff Errol Alphonso. (Samuel Whyte)
