Knowledge and expertise were put to the test yesterday as four teams competed in the Guyana Police Forces’ annual Smellie Cup First Aid Competition Finals held at the Tactical Services Unit Square, Police Headquarters Eve Leary.
The four teams represented were the polices’ General Office ‘A’, Immigration ‘A’, Immigration ‘B’ and a team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Just like last year- the winning team Immigration ‘B’- displayed their notably knowledgeable first aid skills which had spectators in attendance cheering on their every move, and easily copped the 2013 title for the Smellie Cup.
Each team was given the opportunity to enact a scene where in which they render first aid assistance to an injured person, while awaiting an ambulance.
One by one, each team demonstrated different techniques in dealing with the injured.
Although they did not excel in the question and answer session, second place winners, General Office ‘A’ outshined its other two competitors in their practical skills.
Meanwhile, after a few hiccups during their initial presentation, and running out of time in their First Aid enactment, the women of CID completed their task and managed to finish fourth place.
All of the teams were awarded trophies and monetary prizes.
First place winners Immigration ‘A’ received $100,000, second place General Office ‘A’ received $75,000, third place Immigration ‘B’ received $50,000 and the fourth place CID received 25, 000.
The Smellie Cup competition was initiated in the 1950’s as a means of encouraging interest among members of the Guyana Police Force and also preparing them for worst case scenarios.
A total of eighteen teams from the different divisions participated in this year’s competition.
The Felix Austin Police College is the only group to have won the title fourteen times.
