Berbice High School remained in contention for a semifinal berth when they edged past defending champion Tutorial Academy Secondary (TASS) 1-0 and stayed unbeaten in the Wilbur Hope Memorial Inter Secondary School football Competition being played among Schools in the New Amsterdam/Canje area.
With both schools coming into the game with one win under their belt, the game began with both schools looking for the win to enhance their chances in reaching the semifinal stage. In the game which was played on Thursday at the All Saints Scott Church Ground, both schools created and squandering many chances in their efforts to go ahead.
A defence error by TASS in the 28th minute broke the ice to give BHS the 1-0 win.
In the other game, Vryman’s Erven Secondary school (VESS) whipped Canje Secondary School 4-1. John Hikel led the way with a double in the 4th and 58th minutes, while Akeem Haynes 50th and Osafo Mc Donald 53th supported. Jamal Benjamin netted a consolation goal for CSS in the 53rd minute.
The competition will continue on Tuesday and not Monday as was original scheduled with another double header when, BHS go up against BEI and NAMS play VESS. Wednesday will be the day for the final preliminary round of matches with TASS and SON contesting the first game followed by the matchup between CSS and NATI.
The top four schools will advance to the semifinals and subsequent final which is slated for Thursday 7th November.
At the end of the preliminary rounds No1 will play No4 and No 2 and 3 will clash for a place in the final which will be preceded by the third place play off.
The top four teams will be adequately rewarded with trophies, medals and other prizes, while the top individual players will also be presented with accolades.
The competition is being sponsored by overseas based Guyanese and US Army soldier Kevin Henry and the Hope foundation and coordinated by Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey and members of the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club.
