Port Mourant Training Centre one (PMTC 1), Volleyball team maintained their unbeaten streak in Berbice when they claimed the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) organized 3rd Dilip Budhram Memorial Competition played on Sunday last at the PMTC Courts, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
The competition was played on a “round –robin best of 3” basis in very humid conditions and attracted five teams. At the end of the day PMTC 1 remained unbeaten due to awesome plays by setter Jason Seelochan and spiker Quacy Matheson supported by brilliant blocking by Trevlon McRae and “flying” defence by Luen David backed up by Adriel Moore, Osafa Dos Santos and Samuel Ross. The champions defeated all four of their opponents in straight sets, while Port Mourant Jaguars clinched second place by narrowly edging out Albion Sports Complex by 6 points after both teams had won 2 matches and lost 2 matches each.
Before the start of the competition one minute’s silence was observed in memory of the late Dilip Budhram who was a volleyball enthusiast closely associated with the BVA during the period 1998-2003.
At the presentation ceremony held immediately after the conclusion of the competition, BVA President Gregory Rambarran, thanked the members of Dilip Budram’s Family for continuing to assist in the development and promotion of Volleyball in Berbice. The BVA President also thanked Mr. Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall, the Management of the Guysuco Apprentice Centre for their support and the volunteer officials and players for ensuring the successful completion of the event.
Trophies were presented to the captains of the 3rd and 2nd placed teams while the winners received the 1st place trophy and medals.
Medals were awarded to the following players for their outstanding performances- Jason Seelochan of PMTC 1-Best Setter, Ryan Dhoray of Albion Sports Complex-Best Server, Asif Emanulla of PMTC 2 – Best Libero, Quacy Matheson of PMTC 1- Best Spiker, Trevlon Mc Rae of PMTC 1- Best Blocker, Luen David of PMTC 1 –Best Defence, Quacy Matheson of PMTC 1 was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and received a trophy for his performance.
The next BVA activity will be a Mini-Volley competition for Primary Schools in the Lower Corentyne area on November 8th and that will be followed by the Rollers Old Boys Champion of Champions Lien Trophy billed for 9th and 10th November at the Skeldon Community Centre, Upper Corentyne.
