A sweeper/cleaner attached to the Edinburgh Primary School has filed charges against the headmaster for alleged assault. The incident allegedly took place on the school corridor on Thursday shortly before 09:00 hrs in the presence of teachers and students.
Sharon George, 45, of New Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice claimed that while picking up garbage that morning, the headmaster, Mr. Mark Scipio called out to her in a loud tone.
He said, “You, you I would like to talk to you!”
“I told him I was coming and he said, ‘Come now I want you now!’ So I put down the broom and walked towards him. He went on that he will terminate my contract and was pointing up his hands and one his fingers injured me in my left eye. He was still going on….you could have heard him from the road,” George claimed. “The finger landed in my left eye and I got a mark and I told him I’m going to the Ministry [of Education] and he said I can go where the hell I want and he went on!” she alleged.
George stated that for weeks she has been asking the headmaster for a new broom but claimed that he is exercising control over the stocks and other cleaning agents of the school. The school is staffed with two sweeper/cleaners.
After the incident, the woman made a report at the Department of Education in New Amsterdam. The report was taken by Education Officer Mrs. Celeste La Rose. “I showed her the mark and I told her I was going to the station. I made a report to the Central Police Station and the police took a statement from me.”
She also obtained a medical certificate and medication from the New Amsterdam Hospital. She is currently experiencing pains under her left eye, she said.
“I never get a problem with a teacher or head teacher,” said the woman who has been working at the school for more than eight years. Scipio assumed the position of headmaster last September.
“He don’t talk to you nice at all. At one time, I asked for more cleaning agents and he was really rude,” she claimed. “He didn’t talk really nice, so I was afraid to go back to him to talk to him about the broom,” she added.
She said, too, that while sweeping the corridor “ I asked him for broom because it got very hard and he mentioned that a lot of schools he worked at before that cleaners only asked for brooms twice per term and he said he will look into it [issuance of more brooms].”
The case is set for November 19 at 09:00 hrs at Sisters’ Magistrate’s Court on the East Bank of Berbice.
“The whole school witnessed the incident, and the parents heard back that a teacher cuss me down,” she added.
Efforts to contact Mr. Scipio and Mrs. La Rose for comments, proved futile. (Leon Suseran)
