A light Cessna aircraft that had crashed at Wakenaam two years ago, crash-landed on the Essequibo island’s airstrip at around 14:00 hrs yesterday. Sources said that the pilot sustained minor injuries.
Kaieteur News understands that the plane was being taken on a test run, and was making its first flight since the November 2011 mishap.
An eyewitness said that the pilot had taken off from the Wakenaam airstrip and had the plane airborne for a few minutes when it suddenly nose-dived on the airstrip. A source said that the aircraft sustained damages to the propeller. The pilot sustained a few lacerations and was treated at the Wakenaam Hospital.
In late November 2011, the same Cessna 150 aircraft was heading to Guyana from Trinidad and Tobago when the pilot crash-landed in a Wakenaam rice-field after running out of fuel. No one was injured although the plane was damaged.
An experienced aviator had suggested that the American-registered aircraft had run out of fuel due to heavy winds and miscalculation. He said that the pilot had calculated for winds blowing north-northeast at 10 knots when in fact; the winds were moving from southeast between 15 and 20 knots.
This, he said, resulted in additional resistance to the plane thus causing a slower pace which led to the depletion of fuel.
Two persons, including the pilot, an American, were on board the two-seater plane at the time. The co-pilot was a Brazilian.
