Thirty one-year-old Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Lieutenant Ronald Gonsalves was killed, and three of his colleagues are nursing injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), after being the victims of a motor vehicle accident on Mandela Avenue in the vicinity of Rubis Gas Station yesterday.
Lieutenant Gonsalves, a father of two, succumbed shortly after 17:00 hrs despite efforts by doctors to save his life. His colleagues were identified as Lieutenant Antonio Eastman, 25, Lieutenant John Flores (Jnr), 26, and Lieutenant Rickford Warden.
According to information received, Eastman who was the driver of the vehicle which was involved in the accident, was heading south on Mandela Avenue when he swerved from hitting a car and lost control, crashing into a Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL)’s utility pole on the other side of the road.
The GDF in a statement said that Gonsalves succumbed following injuries sustained in the vehicular accident. The release further stated that the survivors who were hospitalized are in stable condition.
An eyewitness told this publication that the accident was not “anyone’s fault.” The eyewitness explained that three girls were pushing their car west along Mandela Avenue, over to the gas station.
“It look like their (girls’) car ran out of gas and they were pushing it over to the gas station but like they didn’t see the car with the men and they continued to push across the road,” the eyewitness posited.
She added, “The car with the military personnel swerved to avoid hitting the girls’ vehicle but ended up losing control and hit the pole instead. The pole breakup and I see something pitch and I thought it was
probably a car seat but it was one of the guys.”
Gonsalves’ relatives refused to speak to the media. Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
