Coleen Davis, of 979 ‘B’ Field Turkeyen, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court faced with a larceny charge.
The 25-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that between October 25 and 27, at 18 Norton Street, Newburg, she stole one embalmment machine valued at $600,000, property of Gordon Lyken.
Police Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue informed the court that Davis is employed at the Lyken Funeral Parlour as a porter. The court heard that on October 25, Davis was off duty but had volunteered to assist with the cleaning of the premises.
Rambajue stated that Gordon, who is the proprietor of the parlour, entrusted the defendant with the keys which she returned after claiming to have concluded the task.
The Prosecution told the court that when Lyken checked the building later he discovered that the item was missing and subsequently reported the matter. The defendant was then arrested and charged.
Prosecutor Rambajue objected to bail stating that the defendant is a flight risk. He further highlighted that the investigations were incomplete.
Magistrate Fabayo Azore placed the woman on $150,000 bail and ordered her to return to court on November 8.
