The opening round of the 2013 NAMILCO/Bakewell T20 knock-out tournament organised by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) continued on Sunday last with four matches at two venues.
At the Cumberland ground, Young Warriors Universal DVD defeated Blairmont Community Centre by 14 runs, while Universal Solutions Bermine squeezed past Port Mourant Karibee Rice by 12 runs.
At the Bush Lot ground in West Berbice, Police defeated Bush Lot Rising Star by six wickets and West Berbice held their nerve to get pass D’Edward Sports Club by three wickets.
Universal Solutions Bermine after losing the toss, was invited to bat first and was indebted to Eugene La Fleur who top scored with 53 (3×4 3×6) as they were dismissed for 128 in 19.3 overs.
Anthony D’Andrade supported with 19 as medium pacer Yugendra Harrinarine took 3 wickets for 18 in 3.3 overs, left arm spinner Robert Moore 3 for 27 and Devindra Thakurdeen 3 for 23.
In reply Port Mourant Karibee Rice were restricted to 116 for 6 in their 20 overs, Thakurdeen led with 37 (4×4) and Parsram Tillkuran 26 not out. Left arm spinner Damon Vantull claimed 2 for 2, Eugene La Fleur 2 for 13 and Joemal La Fleur 2 for 15.
In the second game Young Warriors Universal DVD held their nerves to get pass Blairmont Community Centre by 14 runs. Batting first Young Warriors Universal DVD reached 124 for 8 with the inform Kevin Ramdeen hitting 46 (2×4 3×6) and Balram Samaroo 28.
Left arm pacer Deveshwari Prashad bowled well to take 3 for 22 and left arm spinner Waqar Hassan 2 for 33. Blairmont Community Centre fell short by 14 runs ending on 110 for 8; veteran opening batsman Karamdat Bissoondial top scored with an aggressive 57 (10×4 1×6) and Prashad returned with the bat to score 18. Off spinners Kevin Ramdeen and Linden Austin took 3 for 17 and 2 for 10 respectively.
At the Bush Lot Ground, play was delayed by over 90 minutes due to heavy overnight rain. In the first match, Bush Lot Rising Star was restricted to 66 for 7 in their allotted 12 overs as only Altaf Khan 21 not out and R. Gossai 17 reached double figures.
Bowling for Police, Michael Newland took 2 for 4 and Troy Mickle 2 for 12. In reply Police reached 70 for 4 in 10.2 overs with Martin Sing hitting 30 not out. Witnessed by a fair sized crowd which included NAMILCO Managing Director Bert Sukhai and Financial Controller Fitzroy McLeod, West Berbice bowled out D’Edward for 102 off the final ball of the 20th over.
Jaipaul Heeralall 32 and Devindra Lalsa 26 were the only two batters offering any resistance to hostile bowling from national pacer Keon Joseph who returned the remarkable figures of 4 for 4 runs off 4 overs which included a hat-trick where all the batsmen were bowled. Offspinner Krisendat Ramoo took 4 for 17.
West Berbice spearheaded by Arthley Bailey 30 and Joseph 18 not out reached 103 for 7 off 19 overs. Off spinners Hoolsarran Lalsa 2 for 15 and Navin Rampersaud 2 for 8 bowled well for D’Edward Sports Club in a losing cause.
Second round matches are scheduled for Saturday and will see Albion Community Centre which drew a bye in the first-round clashing with Police at Albion.
Young Warriors Universal DVD will play West Berbice in the morning at 09.00hrs while Universal Solutions Bermine takes on Upper Corentyne at 13:30hrs at the Cumberland ground. Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets has drawn the bye to the semi-finals.
NAMILCO Financial Controller Fitzroy Mc Lean in brief remarks at a simple opening ceremony before West Berbice took on D’Edward Sports Club, said that his Company and Bakewell were pleased to be associated with Berbice cricket.
He expressed confidence that the tournament would be successful and that a high standard of cricket would be exhibited.
