Khemraj Pooranmall employed shrewd tactics and eventually emerged victorious when the Guyana Draughts Association (GDA) staged the Annual National Draughts Championships, the International Squares, at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, over the past weekend.
For his efforts he won the P&P Insurance Trophy, while Steve Bacchus finished second and carted off the Berbice Bridge Inc trophy.
Mark Braithwaite ended on similar points with Esan Anderson but had to settle for the third place by dint of the tie break system. He won the trophy donated by Attorney-at-Law, Gentle Elias as well as a gift. The defending champion, Carlton Simon did not participate in the tournament.
Earlier, Braithwaite triumphed in the ‘B’ Division while Anderson and Franklyn Thomas finished second and third respectively. They received trophies and other gifts donated by the National Sports Commission.
Jairam also failed to defend his title in the ‘A’ division and Pooranmall took advantage of the situation to emerge on top. Veteran player, Wilfred Robinson, finished in the second place while Carlton Simon benefited from the tie break system to close off the podium spots in front of Jairam.
GDA President, Jairam is extending heartfelt gratitude to the corporate entities and individuals that contributed to the success of the tournament. These also include Courts (Guyana) Ltd, Brans Security Services and the Guyana Beverage Inc.
