New Amsterdam Town Week T10 cricket Keith Fraser hammers Memorex in Canefield upset win

A brutal display of power hitting by Berbice all-rounder Keith Frazer helped his team Canefield upset favourites Memorex by five wickets with one ball to spare in a thrilling and controversial final of the New Amsterdam Town Week four-team one-day knockout Ten10 softball cricket competition, played on Thursday last under lights at the All Saints Scott Church ground, Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam.
In the final played between two of Berbice’ top softball teams, Fraser, who plays at the senior Inter County level, was a one man demolition force belting the bowling attack to all parts in and out of the ground, plundering sixes and fours at will in a whirlwind unbeaten 84 (8×6 8×4).
Batting first, favourites Memorex scored a formidable 149 for 5 from their allotted10 overs; Waheed Edwards 38, Vishal Phillips 26 not out and Roy Jafferally 25 were the principal scorers.
Canefield had to restart their innings after being 32-3 in pursuit of the Memorex score when it was discovered that Memorex had 12 players on the field. That was just after the fall of Fraser’s wicket when they batted the first time.
After a lengthy delay, Canefield was offered an additional 43 runs by Memorex which would have taken the score to 72 but Canefield refused the offer. A decision was then taken to restart the innings.
Canefield’s strategy was to get the pugnacious Fraser back at the crease. The decision paid off as the West Berbician, who entered the fray at number three proceeded to hammer the bowlers to all parts of the small ground. Fraser and Joshua Diaram (16) added 102 for the third wicket in quick time.
Memorex kept themselves in the game by keeping Fraser off strike while taking wickets at regular intervals. However, try as they may they could not keep the ruthless Fraser out of the action for long and with 11to get off the final over, Fraser was able to get back on strike and took his side home with one ball to spare.
The losers did not help their cause, conceding 32 extras, the second highest score.
Earlier, Canefield who came into the tournament as underdogs defeated the formidable Universal DVD in a thrilling encounter, squeezing home by one wicket with one delivery to spare.
Batting first Universal DVD reached 115 for 8 off their 10 overs; in reply Canefield reached 116 for nine off 9.5 overs.
In the other game, Memorex whipped No. 19 All Star by 113 runs. Memorex took first strike, blasting their way to 173-5 in their 10 overs. In reponse Number 19 All Star was sent packing for 60 in seven overs.
For their winning effort, Canefield received the GT&T trophy and $20,000, Keith Fraser was named man-of-the-match. (S. Whyte)
