Roger Rajkumar, who finished as runner-up in last year’s competition expressed the view that this weekend’s Digicel Guyana Open will be the most competitive in decades.
Speaking at the launch of the highly anticipated tournament yesterday at the Digicel Head Office, Rajkumar, a Canada-based Guyanese, said more than two dozen golfers are in with a chance of copping the prestigious title which will be played over the weekend at the nine-hole Lusignan Course.
“I’ve got to tell you that there are about 20-30 guys in the field who are of equal or close to equal strength and could produce a winner on any given day depends on the way they play and a little bit of luck,” Rajkumar envisaged as he gave a player’s perspective.
During his remarks Rajkumar also expressed gratitude to the telecommunication company for embracing the Guyana Open, noting that corporate support is vital to the growth and development of any discipline.
When the tournament tees off at 07:00 hours on Saturday- or even earlier if the number of entries rises by Friday- defending champion Avinash Persaud will be the man to beat in the Championship Flight (0-9 handicap).
Persaud, who can be considered a neighbour of the course at Lusignan, will put his title on the line against overseas golfers Rajkumar, Jaipaul Suknanan, Seupaul Suknanan and Anwar Shafi of New York, as well as local counterparts Mohanlall Dinanauth, Alfred Mentore, William Walker, Patrick Prashad, Imran Khan and Munaff Arjune.
The golfers will compete in four categories- the Championship Flight (0-9 handicap), B Flight (10-18), C Flight (19-28) and Ladies Flight- and with the deadline for registration extended to Friday, the number of participants could rise to 100.
The phenomenal Christine Sukhram will look to defend her title from last year against perennial rival Joann Deo and newcomer Shanella Webster, as well as a few foreign participants.
Meanwhile, Vice-president of the Lusignan Golf Club, David Mohamed, indicated that close to 90 persons have completed registration for the two-day tournament, with one third of those being from U.S.A., Canada, Florida, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
Like Rajkumar, Mohamed is confident the competition will produce a high standard of play, as numerous top quality players are in the reckoning for top honours. He also used the opportunity to welcome Digicel as “a premier sponsor of our premier tournament.”
Digicel’s Marketing Director, Jacqueline James, expressed her company’s delight to be part of the Guyana Open for the first time, after initially partnering with the Lusignan Golf Club to stage the Digicel Golf Classic for the past three years.
James’ colleagues- Sponsorship and Events Manager Gavin Hope and Head of Sales Nalini Vieira- echoed similar sentiments, adding that their company is keen on driving youth development, and as such, are urging young person’s to not only come out and witness the competition, but also try their hand at the game.
Following this weekend’s Digicel Guyana Open, local golfers will engage in battle in the MACORP, Wartsila, ECI and King’s Jewellery World Open tournaments.
