In an act of corporate kindness, employees of the Demerara Tobacco Company, (DEMTOCO), have started rehabilitation works to the St Vincent De Paul home for the elderly, located on Carmichael Street, Georgetown.
Rehabilitation works to the St. Vincent De Paul home include repairs to the roof, ceiling, fence, painting of the entire building and distribution of basic furniture.
DEMTOCO’s Managing Director, Jason Fournillier, explained that his company has been affiliated with charitable work.
“We are reaching out to our neighbour to bring happiness; traditionally we have gone out of the area. However this year, we want to do more for our immediate environment. I believe that charity begins at home and what better way to do so than by showing care and appreciation for our elderly folk in society.”
House matron, Ms. Gloria Ramcharan, expressed gratitude to the workers of DEMTOCO, for their generosity.
She said that the home currently has nine female occupants, which will be most happy about the gesture, since it would make their ‘environs a bit brighter.’
Mr. Fournillier told Kaieteur News that this is the first step in a series of activities planned to improve the immediate environs of Carmichael Street, Georgetown.
“In the past we worked with the Mangrove replanting initiative and planting of other trees to beautify parts of the city. We have communication at airports, where we capture historical landmarks and contribute paintings that are displayed for all to see.”
He explains that future plans include work to restore Georgetown as the Garden City.
“We will be approaching the various Ministries and other corporate citizens to see what we can do to bring Georgetown back to its former splendor as the Garden city.”
