Business operations at the new Cotton Field Market have expressed alarm over the continuous losses that they have been encountering during the period of September to date, at the hands of thieves who have been tampering with the padlocks on their stalls.
Businesswoman, Sherene Smith, one of the victims who has suffered tremendous losses at the hands of thieves on three separate occasions, most recently as last Friday, reported that as she was about to resume business on Friday morning, she was confronted by a ransacked stall. Smith has been operating at the Cotton Field market for at least 20 years.
A frustrated Smith added that as she ventured further in her stall she noticed clothes in disarray and later realized on closer examination that the padlock that served as part of a security to her stall was tampered with.
Smith said the thieves were selective, choosing mostly male garments. A report was forwarded to the Clerk of Markets. Smith’s losses have been said to be in the millions of dollars. She has since had to remove the remainder of her items from her stall and transfer her stock to her home out of fear of being attacked again.
Another businesswoman who operates in the same market also complained that her padlocks attached to her stall have been tampered with.
Businesses are open only on Fridays at the Cotton Field market where a lone guard is posted.
