An urgent appeal has been made by the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) to cater to a desperate need for blood.
According to Director of the facility, Dr Nadia Liu, the dire need resulted from an increase in emergency cases, ranging from vehicular accidents to felonious wounding that required patients to undergo blood transfusions.
The resulting state of affairs is that the NBTS’s blood supply is tremendously depleted. Of particular concern are the available levels of the O positive (+) and O negative (-) blood types, according to Dr. Liu.
She noted that the NBTS is urgently calling on members of the public to voluntarily donate blood. She said that although efforts have already been engaged to address the depleting supply of blood, the public can also do its part in helping the situation through voluntary donations.
And according to Dr. Liu the Blood Bank doors are usually opened Monday through Friday from 08:00 to 18:30 hours as well as on Saturdays from 08:00 to 15:00 hours.
Persons desirous of donating can visit the facility located within the compound of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) as soon as possible.
Dr. Liu explained that those eligible to donate are individuals 16 years and older and weigh at least 110 pounds.
According to her it is required that only persons who are living healthy lifestyles may opt to donate blood.
Moreover, the ideal persons to donate blood are young people currently practising abstinence or adults who are in monogamous relationships.
Dr. Liu pointed out too that persons who would have contracted certain diseases such as the Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) are not eligible to donate as are those who would have been infected with malaria within the past three years.
