People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary, Clement Rohee said yesterday that his party hails yet another successful National Toshao’s Conference (NTC) hosted last week at the International Conference Centre.
The politician noted that the event served to advance the future development of Amerindian people and their communities.
He noted that the presence and active participation of over 200 Amerindian leaders at the 2013 NTC has served to also underline the success of the PPP in its continuous effort to empower and give Amerindian people a more direct role in the governance of their communities.
According to Rohee, Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) is a clear example of such an effort. He said that the PPP is pleased to note that during the NTC, it was disclosed that a second wave of LCD projects have been identified.
The General Secretary said that the PPP has noted a resolution passed by the 2013 NTC on ‘political parties unfair decisions related to the development and welfare of Amerindians’ and the disclosure by Amerindian leaders that a lot of their development has been hampered by the actions of the AFC/APNU in cutting the national budget in 2012 and 2013.
Our party will continue to fight for the restoration of those cuts in the High Court and welcomes President Donald Ramotar’s announcement that the communities will receive the Presidential Grants which were slashed by the opposition in the 2012 budget.
According to Rohee, the Amerindian population was in decline up to 1992 after 28 years of being starved of basic resources.
He said that today, they are the fastest growing population in our nation; Amerindians are now in a position to make decisions regarding their future as is best exemplified by the NTC.
“The People’s Progressive Party wishes to acknowledge the tremendous progress our Amerindian people have made since 1992 but at the same time noted that the journey is far from complete as there is still a lot of hard work ahead of us, made even more challenging by the negative forces bent on unwinding our gains but with commitment to the task at hand. Together we will press on and continue to build on our successes.”
With regards to Rohee’s assertion of the PPP government being the major factor in the significant increase of Amerindians in Guyana, the question was posed as to whether the government has made Amerindians more sexually active or whether they just stopped dying.
Rohee’s response was, “…what I can say is that two things can happen: as the living standards and the livelihood of people improve, and the well being is being improved you obviously find it much more affordable to have more children…having regard to the fact that the well being and the standards of living of most Amerindians are improving steadily, that obviously appears to be an incentive in this respect.”
Rohee added that professionalization and government’s focus on academia appears to be other contributory factors.
