Haifeng Su rebounded from an earlier loss to Anthony Drayton to amass six points and reclaim the crown when the Sasha Cells National Junior Chess Championship concluded at the Guyana Legion Hall, Carifesta Avenue Sunday evening last.
The closely contested championship saw Drayton finishing the tournament trailing the eventual
winner by a mere half of a point (5 ½). Ironically, Drayton had dethroned Haifeng Su by a similar margin last year to clinch the accolade.
Drayton started the tournament as the favourite and enforced such confidence when he defeated Haifeng Su in an earlier encounter. The former player was well set to retain the crown but Roberto Neto of Diamond Secondary School delivered a crushing blow with after registering a crushing fourth round victory. Consequently, the tournament had assumed an interesting twist with Drayton, Haifeng Su and Neto all on three points apiece heading into the final day’s play with three rounds to go.
The defending champion was then matched against his predecessor once again and this time Haifeng Su tightened up and played his way to the win and the eventual crown.
Though inconsequential, Kaieteur Sport will attempt to procure the final points standing for a subsequent article along with other relevant details.
