– nationals to be rescheduled
Expectations were high when the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) had planned
their two-day Outreach to the Ancient County of Berbice for last Saturday and Sunday, October 26 and 27.
A high powered team from the national body had even visited the area to lay the ground work for what they were hoping would have been a successful weekend. But as it turned out, the response was very poor forcing GAWA to call off the activity on the first day.
General Secretary Deion Nurse informed that only two persons turned up at the venue, Rose Hall Town Youth and sports Club on Saturday. Given the level of investment that was made, Nurse said that GAWA was not prepared for a repeat on day two, so they decided to call it off.
“It was very disappointing with the poor response we got despite the fact that we visited before and were given all assurances that persons would have attended. However, the experience will not deter or moves to revive the sport.”
The association had also scheduled their National championships which would have been returning after more than two years and that too was called off. About eight athletes, most from the city were scheduled to compete. Nurse disclosed that a new date will be set for Nationals either in November or December.
