…way cleared for increased trade with MERCOSUR
Yesterday marked a significant moment within the history of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), when Argentina’s Ambassador, Luis Alberto Martino, presented his credentials to CARICOM. Ambassador Alberto is Argentina’s Ambassador to Guyana.
Secretary General of CARICOM, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, received the credentials at the CARICOM Secretariat in Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara yesterday.
Ambassador LaRocque welcomed the Argentine Ambassador Alberto to the Caribbean Community.
“Ever since President Kirchner’s Administration decided to re-open Argentina’s Embassy in Guyana in June 2011, Ambassador Alberto has worked assiduously at strengthening the CARICOM-Argentina relations at the regional level through several meetings with me and senior officials of the Secretariat” LaRocque said.
The areas for cooperation being developed between Argentina and CARICOM Member States at the bilateral level, all send a very powerful message of Argentina’s determination to enhance its relations with the Region” he posits.
The Argentine Ambassador spoke to the expanding and strengthening presence that his country is having in the region, citing the re-opening of our Argentina’s Embassies in Guyana and Barbados and the establishment of two new ones in St. Lucia and Suriname.
“These initiatives are part of the larger policy of closer cooperation with the region, as well as the political process within CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States).”
“With the recent incorporation of the Republic of Guyana and the Republic of Suriname as Associate Members of MERCOSUR (the Southern Common Market), I am convinced this provides an open ground to develop a closer integration between these two regional bodies (CARICOM and MERCOSUR)” Martino articulated.
According to Ambassador Alberto, Argentina’s interest within
the region is in accordance with one of the principles in foreign policy, that being to achieve across the board sub and bi-regional integration, more specifically between the Caribbean and South America.
“With the re-opening of our Embassy in Georgetown and the appointment of a Resident Representative to CARICOM, Argentina in fact hopes to strengthen the ties and develop new areas of integration with the Caribbean under the paradigm of south-south cooperation.”
Ambassador Luis Alberto Martino has declared his intention to work assiduously to make sure that his goals are in accordance with the best interest of all CARICOM Member States and his country.
