Businessman Rondy Jagdeo, the prime suspect in the murder of Eccles resident Kirk Davis, surrendered to police yesterday, almost two months after the brutal killing of his one time friend.
Jagdeo, who was accompanied by attorneys Roger Yearwood and Mark Waldron, surrendered at the Ruimveldt Police Station around 15:00 hrs. He was subsequently taken to the Brickdam Police Station. A police official said that the 28-year-old man is likely to be charged this week.
As news of the arrest spread, some of the slain man’s close relatives turned up at the Providence and Brickdam Stations in the hope of seeing the suspect.
Kaieteur News understands that Jagdeo gave police a statement in which he denied any involvement in Davis’s death, which is said to have stemmed from a dispute over a woman. Police had issued a wanted bulletin for Jagdeo, even as they had received reports that the suspect had fled to Suriname.
Asked why his client was only now surrendering, attorney-at-law Roger Yearwood alleged that Jagdeo had been receiving death threats. “A lot of death threats were sent to Mr. Jagdeo, and he is still concerned about his safety,” the attorney told Kaieteur News.
The 31-year-old Davis, of Seventh Street, Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was riddled with bullets on Tuesday, September 5, outside his residence by a man who called him out of his home.
There are reports that after the first bullets struck Davis, the Eccles resident attempted to run back inside his house, but collapsed after more bullets struck him in the back. The gunman reportedly then stood over Davis and pumped several more bullets into the fallen man. In the end Davis was shot at least 15 times.
Police were told that a woman had accompanied the shooter to the scene and that a stray bullet struck her in the foot. She was admitted to a private hospital. Police later said that she was not cooperating with investigators.
Police have received reports that Davis was the victim of a jealous husband, who reacted angrily to a text message that was sent to his wife. It is alleged that threats were also sent to Davis after he allegedly kissed the man’s spouse in a popular night club.
