Rodeo fans had a full platter of action on a sun drench day as the Rising Sun Rodeo Committee successfully held an action packed, fun filled day of breathtaking action at the entity’s venue Rising Sun, Arima Park West Coast Berbice on Sunday last.
It was a day filled with skills, thrills, spills, and plenty of fun and frolic as the Vaqueros displayed their abilities in some daring and breathtaking sequences as many spectators were left
bewildered and in awe.
This year the competition was very intense as more cowboys came out to do their thing including some 16 and 17 years old.
Some Vaqueros endured some awkward tumbles but managed to continue to perform. Some were not as lucky as they and their horses received slight injuries. Some of the riders were butted, kicked and charged by the raging bulls, turning in some daring escapes.
Several spectators who sought better viewing on fences were forced to beat hurried retreats as some of the wild bulls and horses charged into the fences.
Nine events were run off, among the favorites were the Bare back bronco, Bull riding and Saddle bronco. These events are similar. The vaqueros had to wear a pair of spurs, and stay on the animal for 10 seconds, one hand must be free away from the animal at shoulder level at all time. The Vaqueros would then throw their hats in the air as a sign of triumph. Wild Cow milking, where the participants (a pair) had to rope, restrained and milk the animal within a period of two minutes. The participant with the most milk won.
In the Calf roping, the Vaquero on horseback was required, to rope a calf around the neck dismount the horse, secure three feet of the calf by tying it, stand and raise their hand in the air to indicate that they are done, the persons with the fastest time won.
In the end the various winners were: Wild Cow milking – saw the Rupununi pair of Carlos Davis and Clive Andres being the only successful pair. The Calf roping event saw Carlos Davis winning from Clive Andres.
In the Bare Back Bronco event- Max Celso thrilled the crowd with his acrobatics and skills to be crowned champion ahead of Keno Hardcourt and Richard Peters. Bull Riding saw 16 year old Brazilian Julio Santos taking top honours ahead of Max Farias and Keno Hardcourt.
The Saddle Bronco event was won by Vender Peters ahead of Brazilian Julio Santos and Richard Peters.
Clive Ross did an excellent job in the Steer Roping event as his lasso went first time around the animal neck as he edged out Keno Hardcourt and Johnny Nurse by a few seconds.
Brazilian beauty 16 year old Ioni Atkinson, a secondary school student of Bon Finn Brazil, strode away with the Rodeo Queen competition from four other beauties. The young lady with hobbies of Hand ball and Swimming made sure that her first trip to Guyana and on stage was worth the while. In second place was 17year old Monalisa Barker of Lethem, while coming in third was Jacqueline De Nobrega 21 of Georgetown. The other two contestants were Anna Carolina Barker17 of Lethem and Monique junior of Georgetown.
The Best Dress male Vaquero prizes went to Brazilian Yuri with Max Celso and Vender Peters occupying the other spots.
The event was attended by a wide cross section of spectators. The prizes which included cash incentives and trophies, were presented to the outstanding performers immediately after the completion of the final events. Organiser Fazal Habibulla was once again overwhelmed and pleased with how the day unfolded. He was happy with the support of the many fans and expressed his gratitude for all the support received. He was also loud in praise for the media in helping to publish the event.
There were plenty of improvements including Double rails being inserted all around the Rodeo arena, which was used to guide the animals to their various stations and also used for the safety of the spectators.
