The second annual Wilbur Hope Memorial Inter Secondary School football tournament is set to get kicking today.
The competition, which caters for Secondary Schools in the New Amsterdam/ Canje area, is being played in memory of the late Wilbur Hope popular known as ‘Hopey’ a former resident of Tucber Park. It is sponsored by former N.A.M.S student and US Army Soldier Kevin Leroy Henry and friends and is being organised by former national ball weaver Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey and the Hearts of Oak Masters football club.
Eight schools are slated to participate in the competition namely – Berbice High School (BHS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS), Tutorial Academy Secondary school (TASS), Vryman’s Erven Secondary (VESS) and Canje Secondary School (CSS), New Amsterdam Technical institute (NATI) and School of the Nations (SON).
The competition will be played at the Scot Church ground using the round robin format and will be played over eight days, with a double header slated for the respective days. The top four schools will advance to the semifinals and subsequent final which is slated for Thursday 7th November.
The full fixture is as follows:-
Monday 28th will see BEI taking on TASS and NAMS verses CSS.
Tuesday 29- BHS plays SON and VESS against NATI.
Wednesday 30th BEI will meet SON and NAMS tangle with NATI.
Thursday 31st BHS oppose TASS and VESS match skills against CSS.
Monday 4th BHS goes up against BEI and NAMS playing VESS.
The final preliminary games are slated for the 5th November with TASS and SON contesting the first game followed by the matchup between CSS and NATI.
At the end of the preliminary rounds No1 will play No4 and No 2 and 3 will clash for a place in the final which will be preceded by the third place play off. The top four teams will be adequately rewarded will trophies, medals and other prizes, while the top individual players will also be presented with accolades. (Samuel Whyte)
