Dear Editor,
On August 30, 2013 two Housing Ministry officers conducted a meeting in Bartica, with owners of house lots at Five Miles Housing Scheme, Bartica/ Potaro Road. The two officers advised the residents that they will have to be relocated and give up their house lots, since the land was eroding and as such was not suitable to build on.
On the September 21, 2013 a meeting was conducted by some Executive members of the APNU, including the Regional Chairmen and MP of APNU, and some of the affected residents of the Five Miles scheme.
The APNU team said that when they returned to Georgetown they will urgently take up the matter to Mr. Irfaan Ali, Minister of Housing, advising him to have the eroded area fixed, and if Mr. Ali said that this cannot be done, the APNU will send an engineer to check the area. Based on the engineer’s assessment, the APNU said it will make recommendation to Mr. Ali , to have the situation corrected, since they strongly believed that they eroded area can be fixed.
On the same day of the meeting between the residents and the APNU , a number of affected residents met with the Bartica United Youth Development Group(BUYDG), requesting that the BUYDG make representation on their behalf to have the Issue resolved urgently. The BUYDG then advised the residents that they way further was for the BUYDG to dispatch a letter to the government requesting a meeting to have the matter resolved urgently and in a peaceful manner.
Residents and the BUYDG shortly after met and established its five-member delegation. By letter dated 14th October 2013 the delegation, including five other affected residents, signed and dispatched a letter to the Minister of Housing and Water. The letter proposed for an urgent meeting between the delegation and Ali, for:
(a) A favorable Resolution to have the lands situation (b) Persons whose house lots are not located at the eroded area to retain ownership of their lots, (c ) The eroded location to be corrected and those persons whose House lots are located at the said location to remain owner of their House lots,(d) Issuance of Land titles and (e) The Establishment of a Land committee and Office in Region Seven.
The BUYDG contacted the office of the ministry of housing for a date for the meeting requested. To date, we are being told continuously by employees of the Ministry that they gave Minister Ali the letter, but he has not pronounced on it, and soon as he does they will send us an email of call us.
The BUYDG, after making several calls to Mr. Ali’s cell phone, was advised by Mr. Ali that he is in a meeting .
Mr. Editor, the BUYDG is aware that Mr. Ali has a very busy schedule, since he were involve in a lot land activities and the R. Kelly show in Guyana, but we hope and are calling on Mr. Ali to urgently schedule a date, time and place for the delegation to meet with him to have this issue resolved.
