A 20 year-old man was yesterday pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was struck in the stomach by a piece of blade while working with a grinding machine on the East Coast of Demerara.
The man was identified as 20 year-old Akeem Holder of lot XX 13 North East, La Penitence.
According the Holder’s mother, Norma Paul, about 9:00 am yesterday, she received a call from one of her son’s associates informing her that Holder was involved in an accident at his work site at Victoria.
“They said that he was working on a machine grinding some things and the next thing they know is a piece of the blade break off and ketch he in he stomach,” Paul said.
The woman added that her son was then rushed to the GPHC but succumbed on the way.
Paul told this newspaper that based on reports she received, her son was not wearing any protective gear while performing his duties.
Police on the East Coast of Demerara have indicated that they are treating the matter as an accident.
A post mortem examination is to be performed on Holder’s body today.
