Dear Editor,
At every next large political rally or discussion with Guyanese masses, Guyana’s next leader needs to say the following words: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of Guyana and to the republic for which it stands. I apologize for all the wrongs that have been inflicted on each of you by both the PNC and PPP. I vow to protect Guyana’s sovereignty and bring to justice those who have robbed and pillage the national coffers.”
Guyana’s next leader needs to be a strong nationalist who will put country above party, articulate a vision for the country that includes an independent judiciary, respect for the rule of law, deliver safety and security to its citizens, provide a level playing field for all and secure all borders to maintain the sovereignty of the nation.
The recent events of Venezuela’s provocative actions of arresting a vessel and crew operating in Guyana’s water did not happen in a vacuum. In fact the actions of the PPP government under an effete and supine president Jagdeo and continued by the equally inept and out of his depth Mr. Ramotar, created and fostered a permissive atmosphere for Venezuela (and Suriname to a lesser extent) to behave with impunity and increasing bellicosity. Venezuela’s recent incursion at Eteringbang during president Maduro’s visit was met with the usual ham-handed obfuscation from the PPP’s reliable garrulous mouthpiece Roger Luncheon.
Given the specious and long since settled claim Venezuela has made to Essequibo, the then president Jagdeo entered into an ill-advised arrangement with the unstable and now deceased president Chavez that saw Guyana receive Venezuela’s oil for next to nothing while nothing was done to develop Guyana’s own oil potential in the Essequibo region. Venezuelan military personnel killed Guyanese on Guyana soil; barges were destroyed and military incursions occurred regularly with hardly a murmur from the PPP government. It was clear as day, Jagdeo couldn’t afford to bite the hand that fed him. Guyana’s sovereignty no longer mattered.
What mattered was the ever-increasing greed and avarice of the emboldened ruthless and kleptocratic ruling cabal who by omission or commission allowed drug barons to operate with impunity and corruption, nepotism and marginalization to become the de facto law of the land. What mattered was keeping the PPP traditional support base misinformed and fooled by the likes of GAWU chairman who as PPP parliamentarian and union leader did next to nothing to help save the sugar industry because of a conflict interest. Do you serve the PPP and your parliamentary perks or the lowly sugar worker as union leader? The proof is in the failed Skeldon monstrosity. Time and again the interest of the average citizen has been sacrificed at the altar of personal aggrandizement by countless but now amazingly wealthy PPP government functionaries.
What’s next – The PPP has demonstrably proven that they can no longer be trusted to manage the affairs of Guyana and while the elected opposition does not engender much confidence in their abilities, now is the time for a true leader to step forward. America has been a better friend to Guyana than Guyana deserves and now is the time to show appreciation for that friendship because the two country’s interest are intertwined in seeing a Venezuela that respects international conventions and borders. However, for this to happen, America has to believe that there are political actors with integrity and desire to see a just and equal Guyana with a commitment to the rule of law. Guyana needs regime change to save it from itself, lest there will be no more Guyana after the Venezuelans have claimed Essequibo; the Surinamese have claimed Berbice and the PPP would have sold off Demerara to the highest bidder.
