– Suspect later arrested on WBD
A 45-year-old woman whose throat was slit early yesterday by her jealous ex- lover is now battling for her life at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Denise Hope, a clothes vendor on Regent Street, Georgetown, was also stabbed in her back. Her attacker, Godfrey Lammy, a former member of the Georgetown City Constabulary was later arrested.
Police said that 60-year-old Lammy was arrested at Sister’s Village, West Bank Demerara, approximately five hours after he attacked his lover. Kaieteur News was told that two months ago, Lammy was ordered by the court to stay 150 feet away from the now injured woman but according to a vendor, “He still does come around” her and threaten her.
According to reports, around 06:30am yesterday, Hope was heading to her vending spot when the suspect ‘suddenly’ appeared in front of her, wearing a black hooded vest.
“He parked his car and he hid at the corner of the church and as soon as she was near, he jumped out and hugged her. She was telling him to let go of her when he pulled out a knife and slit her throat and stab her in her back,” an eyewitness said.
She added that Hope, a Tucville, Georgetown resident ran into the Universal Church to seek help but “two Brazilians hold her by her foot and hand and bring her out and put her to lie down on the concrete.”
This newspaper was told that after the suspect attacked Hope, he got into his car and drove away.
“That man is cruel. He stripped his son’s mother on Lombard Street, Georgetown and kicked her in a drain. A man had to give the woman his shirt. He also hit his daughter’s mother and now the woman can’t see from one of her eyes,” a friend of Hope’s said.
