The day has finally arrived and fans will trek to the Rising Sun Turf Club, Arima Park Arena, West Coast, Berbice for their grand Rodeo today starting at 11:00hrs.
The Rising Sun Rodeo Committee event is expected to be a ‘one of a kind life time experience’ and with the Ministry of Tourism also adding the activity to its calendar of events, thousands of visitors, tourist those from the interior and ‘coastlanders’ alike are also expected to swarm the venue for the ‘wild day of action on the coast.’
All the Vaqueros and other participants from overseas and other parts of Guyana, including the far flung interior areas have all arrived for what is expected to be a day filled with thrills skills and spills. Over the past week the organisers used the opportunity to formalize preparations and made sure every system is in place. The venue was also tested with a few trial runs during the week using most of the cowboys that are expected to be on show today. According to coordinator and President of The Rising Sun Rodeo Committee, Inshanally Habibulla, all systems are in place for the action.
The venue has been given a spruced up with more rails added and the old ones replaced. The ground has also been graded and prepared. The number of participants has increased significantly with the overseas contingent from Brazil, Suriname and Venezuela along with those from Lethem, the Rupununi Savannahs and the Corentyne River being involved in exercises on the Rising Sun Turf during the past week.
According to information, Fazal Habibulla and his West Berbice Posse, which makes up the bulk of the local brigade from the Abary, Mahaica and Mahaicony River areas, were also in action and are well prepared to defend their turf.
Over 12 different activities in the various categories are slated to be staged and millions of dollars in prizes including cash and trophies are up for grabs.
Among the activities listed to be held is the steer roping, bare back bronco, which should also see the females getting into action. There are also male and female barrel race, wild cow milking, calf roping, wild bull riding, Saddle bronco and the popular Tug O War event and the return of the Rodeo King competition.
The various winners and other outstanding performers will be presented with monetary incentives, trophies and other attractive prizes.
A number of business entities have come on board to help sponsor the event. Among them are Banks DIH Limited, AH and L Kissoon, Trophy Stall Bourda Market, Muneshwar Guyana Limited, Hablaw Meat Centre, Chester Fry Bush Lot West Coast and Rising Sun Cattle Ranch.
