Today’s Digicel Cancer Awareness 80-Mile Cycle Road Race is not just a race but an event that is aimed at heightening awareness about Breast Cancer in this month of October that has been dedicated towards this dilemma.
Weekes of planning and training by the organisers (Roraima Bikers Club & Guyana Cycling Federation) and the competitors will be put to the ultimate test today when the race pedals off from Five Corner on Sir David Rose Avenue (Mackenzie), Linden at 07:30hrs this morning.
Over 100 riders are expected to face starters orders, all eight clubs affiliated to the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) will be fielding cyclists, while a number of unattached and casual riders are also anticipated to be in contention.
The largest first prize ever in the history of the sport is at stake ($240,000) while the biggest prize pool is also on offer in the four categories that will be on show, seniors, juniors, ladies and veterans.
Seniors and juniors will battle over 80-miles staring in Linden and finishing at the entrance of the National Park, Carifesta Avenue. The ladies and veterans will pedal off at Splashmin’s Fun Park, Linden Soesdyke Highway to also finish at the same point as the seniors and juniors.
Some new measures will be put in place to ensure a smooth flow and control of the race, marshals and accredited vehicles will be used by the organisers to ensure a quality and high standard activity.
Only officials will be allowed on the southern side of the road at the finishing line while all Team and Management vehicles will have parking at the National Park Car Park.
Members of the public who will be coming out along the race route are asked to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness and to urge the riders on.
Race Route: Starting point is at Five Corner on Sir David Rose Avenue (Mackenzie), continuing East along Sir David Rose Avenue, South onto the Linden Soesdyke Highway, South onto East Bank Public Road, East into Mandela Avenue turning at Distribution Services Limited (DSL) and continuing North on Mandela Avenue into Sheriff street, West onto Rupert Craig Highway, West into Public Road Kitty, West on Carifesta Avenue, South into Camp street, West on Thomas Lands, North into J.P Latchmansingh Highway, East into Carifesta Avenue.
Competitors will then ride the Outer Circuit of the National Park for two laps before the contest ends at the entrance of the National Park, Carifesta Avenue entrance.
