Following the confirmation late yesterday that the way is now cleared for basketball to be played in Linden and the 4th Brusche’s Classic will get underway tonight with defending champions Georgetown’s Trinity Grid Holdings Pacesetters taking on Amelia’s Ward Jets at the Mackenzie Sports Club.
Georgetown’s THG Pacesetters is seeking to capture their third championship in the tournament’s four year history.
The clashes between Georgetown and Linden teams date back to decades of epic encounters and so far Pacesetters have won twice with the other going to Wismar Pistons. They face a tough opponent in Amelia’s Ward Jets in the lone fixture tonight which bounces off at 8:30pm after the march-past of teams.
Meanwhile, United States-based James Brusche, Hewley Harry and Keith Alexander/Gittens along with Trevor Gittens will conduct a clinic at the MSC Court from 9am. Some 30 students from ten Primary Schools have been chosen to attend the one-off session.
James Brusche is one of three brothers who represented Guyana and have seen it fit to have this annual tournament played to generate interest and develop the game. The various teams have been given balls and T-Shirts, which will be used in the opening ceremony which will include Regional Chairman, Sharma Solomon.
The Brusche Basketball Foundation has organised this tournament, which is a straight knockout format. The other city teams are Colts and Ravens, who will play on Wednesday in Georgetown.
But tonight’s game should see the experienced Stephon Gillis, Naylon Loncke and guard, Travis Burnett, who have all played senior national basketball for Guyana taking their challenge to Shane Webster and his brother Allister in collaboration with their guards, Kevin Joseph, Neil Simon and Rodwell Pellew.
