GCA launches Noble House Seafoods & Carib Beer tourneys

The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) yesterday launched the Noble House Seafoods Second Division Two-day and Carib Beer First Division T20 tournaments at the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC).
Chairman of the GCA Competitions Committee Shaun Massiah said that due to the unavailability of grounds the competition will get underway on November 2. The teams have been divided into Two Zones with Zone A comprising of Police, University of Guyana (UG), Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC), Transport Sports Club (TSC), Muslim Youth Organization (MYO), Everest Cricket Club and St. Stanislaus while Zone B includes Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), MSC, Third Class, Gandhi Youth Organization (GYO), Sophia, Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Guyana Defense Force (GDF).
One bonus point will be awarded when a team reaches 125 runs and one (1) for every 25 runs added thereafter up to 225 runs. One bonus point will also be awarded for the first two wickets taken and for every two wickets taken thereafter up to a maximum of 5 points. Pace bowlers must account for at least twenty five percent of overs bowled in any innings that exceeds 20 overs.
The top two teams from each Zone will contest the semifinals. The victorious team will receive a trophy and $100,000 and the runner-up a trophy and $60,000. Members of both teams will also be given medals. Players will be rewarded for outstanding individual performances in the tournament.
The Carib Beer competition will be played on a League basis in Two Zones with the top two teams from each zone advancing to the semis. Zone A consists of GCC, GYO, TSC, GDF and Police while Zone B is made of DCC, MSC, GNIC and Everest. However teams in Zone B will play each other twice so that each team in the competition will have an opportunity to play four preliminary round games.
Pace bowlers must account for 40% of the allotted overs in an innings by the fielding team when that team bowls its full complement of scheduled overs. The competition is set to start on Sunday with GDF facing Police at Eve Leary from 09:30hrs and GCC facing TSC at 13:30hrs in Zone A at the said venue.
In Zone B at Everest, DCC will take on MSC from 09:30hrs and Everest will battle GNIC from 13:30hrs. President of the GCA Roger Harper thanked the sponsors for giving the youths an opportunity to develop their talent and said the competitions should create lots of excitement. Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Ansa McAl Darshanie Yusuf said they are pleased to be part of a T20 tournament and urged the younger players to emulate senior counter parts like Chris Barnwell and Leon Johnson.
Yusuf stated the company has sponsored cricket at all levels in Guyana and hoped the fans will support the players. She informed that the entity’s Managing Director Beverly Harper will present an award to the most outstanding player in the final on behalf of her late father Herbie Harper who was a former wicketkeeper/batsman. The winning and runner-up teams will be given trophies while each member will receive medals. Additionally, the first placed team will collect $110,000 and the runner up $60,000.
