– Ministers urge fathers to take active role in the lives of their children
In recognition of the importance of education to child care, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Regional Democratic Council, Region Four, yesterday officially commissioned the Diamond Nursery School at 14th Street, Diamond Scheme yesterday.
The Nursery will provide 120 students with a healthy environment to explore a world of social skills and hands-on experiences with qualified teachers.
Parents, teachers and students assembled at the location where the school was officially presented to them by Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, who was also in the company of Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh.
Also in attendance were senior members of the education Ministry who expressed that the Nursery is tangible proof of the Ministry’s plans to develop the education sector in Guyana in the face of all obstacles.
The enthused children who found it hard to contain themselves told members of the media corps, with hearty smiles, ”we love our school! It’s big and pretty!”
The edifice is painted in yellow with sections of its borders coloured in gray and green.
Also speaking at the momentous event was Project Manager of the Basic Needs Trust Fund, Michael Singh.
“This occasion is very special to me because, before this Nursery was here, the entire area was a lot of cane fields, and it is especially pleasing to see how far Guyana is going.”
“The Basic Needs Trust Fund is a programme funded by the Government and the Caribbean Development Bank in Barbados, which provides resources to poor countries in order to improve access to basic public services and further reduce vulnerability to risks that impact income and well being.”
“The construction commenced October 17, 2012 and was completed in July 23, 2013 at a cost of $64.5M,” Singh told the gathering.
Sharing his sentiments, Minister Manickchand expressed how pleased she was with the project.
She also took the time to call on the parents in attendance to ensure they support their children in whatever way they can.
The Minister noted that five of Guyana’s students, four of whom are girls, copped the Regional Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) awards for the best student in the areas of Business studies, Science, Technical Vocational studies and Humanities. Guyana also copped the award for the Most Outstanding Overall Candidate of the region.
The Education Minister then said, “The reason I mention this is because some people say that, ‘oh they got that award because they are rich’. And I want to reiterate that you don’t have to be rich in order to support your children. In fact, some of these students are from very modest homes.”
“I had the privilege of meeting a parent of one of the top performing students and the parent didn’t know one thing she was studying but guess what, when her daughter had to be up early in the morning studying , she was there with her, foot and foot, and that is the kind of support your children need.”
Also adding to this call was the Finance Minister, Dr. Singh.
“Whilst the Diamond Scheme has grown and represents the progress of the Education system, I wish to reiterate Minister Manickchand’s calls for fathers to be more involved in the lives of their children. She had made this call at a similar event and I feel it is important to do so again.”
The Finance Minister also lauded the work of the Ministry of Education and expressed his satisfaction with the Beterverwagting Nursery School which was opened earlier in the day.
