A City Magistrate yesterday made a 40-year-old woman, an example, by remanding her to prison after she was brought before the court for leaving her children hungry for long hours whilst she enjoyed the night life with her various male friends.
Reading the particulars of the charge to the mother of five was Magistrate Alex Moore who presides at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
The court heard that on October 19, at Lot 973 B Field, Sophia, East Coast Demerara, Angela Richardson willfully ill treated her five children aged 13, nine, seven, four and one in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering to their health.
To the allegations, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
According to court documents, on the date in question, about 8:00am, Richardson had left her children at their Sophia home which was in a cluttered state.
After not being fed before their mother left the home, the children wandered out about midday and were seen trying to catch fish from a nearby trench. They then took the fish home and tried to cook it.
Neighbours, who noticed that the mother had not returned, made a report to the Ministry of Human Services because it disturbed them to know that the children were at home on a school day.
An Officer from the Child Protection Agency subsequently came and removed the children from the home.
The Officer told the court that Richardson is in the habit of leaving her children hungry for long hours despite the fact that she is supported by the Ministry.
The training sessions, according to the officer, were designed to help Richardson be a better parent.
But according to the court documents, the exercises seemed to be a waste of time.
Magistrate Moore, who noted the reports of the Officer, concluded that the woman needed help to have her resume a functioning and respectable role in the lives of her children.
Magistrate Moore then told Richardson, “A decision will be made as to whether you will be tried based on the report and findings of the Protection officer.”
Whilst Richardson was refused bail and is expected to appear before the court on November 27, Head of the Child Protection Agency, Ms. Ann Greene, in an invited comment said, “Richardson is a neglectful mother and it is something that is going on for too long.”
“There are too many cases recently of children being neglected and we need the court’s assistance in sending a strong message to irresponsible parents.”
“We have tried to give this woman chances but she is just too often with this. The children are left hungry and they go and try to catch fish and then go home and try to cook it by themselves and that is how you have so many fires with children involved in it.”
“Again, I say, we are determined to send a strong message, for these children need supervision.”
