Plans are moving apace to reconstruct the L’Aventure Secondary School, which was recently torched by a fire.
Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam, told Kaieteur News that the Ministry is currently in the process of selecting a contractor to execute the project.
“We have already identified funding. The last time I checked, bids were submitted for us to procure a contractor to rebuild the burnt out sections of the school. This will start as soon as possible.”
Early last month, the L’Aventure Secondary School, located at Canal Number One Polder, West Bank of Demerara, was ruined by fire. The flames destroyed sections of the school, including the Administrative and Home Economics Departments, the auditorium and several classrooms, displacing 699 students.
The students of the school are currently being accommodated at a private property owned by Kamal Singh located next to the Canal Number One Health Centre.
However, complaints reaching this newspaper suggest that the alternative arrangement has become uncomfortable for students and teachers of the school.
“We have sent several letters to the Ministry of Education because of issues we are currently faced with at this alternative location. We want to know what is happening with our school; when the work will start and finish …because while we are thankful for the substitute space to have school, we want to know how long we will be here because there are some issues that need urgent fixing,” a teacher of L’Aventure Secondary School stated.
“We don’t have public transportation to get to and from the temporary school location. At the shed where we are housed, students and teachers are left to contend with the cement dust of uncapped floors. The dust triggers respiratory problems as well as outbreaks of skin infections. The heat is terrible as the walls are not enclosed.
“The toilet facilities are not enough. We have four toilets to share amongst students and teachers, because the six additional mobile toilets are not emptied on a regular basis.”
However, the Chief Education officer says that no official complaints have reached the Ministry in this regard.
According to the Education official, the only issue that was reported by the Regional Education Officer (REDO) is that of the dust affecting the students and this is currently being addressed.
He explained that the regional administrative department took on the responsibility to acquire public transportation for students and teachers to travel the extra distance.
“There was a consensus between parents, teachers and the Ministry as it relates to the temporary location because after the fire there was no other suitable alternative accommodation; we have a private citizen who quickly agreed to aid the school.”
Sam said that the reconstruction of the school is a process which will take time. “At this point, I am unable to give a date for the completion of the school.”
