Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, said that Government has made no decision to acquire the Trinidadian vessel which is currently anchored off Parika Beach, East Bank Essequibo.
According to Luncheon the main interest of persons “who brought” the vessel to Guyana was to have Government acquire it. He said that as of yesterday government has done nothing in this regard.
The vessel, which was reportedly purchased in Trinidad for scrap, has raised eyebrows because of its presence at Parika Beach for several days now. Public Works Minister Robeson Benn had disclosed that his office has received a proposal. He has however declined to give details.
The 1,400-tonne vessel was reportedly purchased for just over US$100,000 and was brought here to be chopped up for scrap and then exported.
Kaieteur News has since learnt that moves were made to have it sold to Government for US$1M with the intention that the hull would be used on the MV Malali.
However, Works Minister Robeson Benn and Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon say that the entire vessel may be used on the North West run.
