Roopnarine Ramnarine, 43, of Belvedere Village, Corentyne, Berbice was sentenced to nine months in jail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on a charge of Assault Causing Actual Bodily harm.
He assaulted his mother, Premnarine Ramnarine.
Prosecutor, Sergeant Phillip Sherriff told the court that around 19:15 hrs on October 16, last, the elderly woman was at home when the accused came home and started using expletives. The woman scolded him about his continuous disgraceful behaviour and the man became annoyed, picked up a piece of wood and dealt his mother several lashes about her body. It was later discovered that her thumb was fractured. The woman who was in court with her hand in plaster of paris, told investigators that she was fed up with her son’s bad behaviour. She said that it was the third time he was beating her although she has to cook and care for him. She had made reports to the station on two previous occasions.
The man confessed to committing the crime and apologized in court. He blamed his indiscretion on his consumption of alcohol.
When asked by the Magistrate how long a sentence he would like to have- beginning with 18 months, he stated, “Nine months.”
