The Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA) on Friday last launched the fourth edition of the Corporate Business in Sports (CBIS) Inter-Agency Softball cricket Tournament, Fun day and Exhibition cricket games under the theme “Fostering Unity among Corporate Businesses.”
The launching which took place on the Lawn Tennis Court at Strand and New Street, New Amsterdam, was attended by the respective captains of the participating teams along with sponsors and members of the BCCDA.
The teams are expected to engage in 10/10 cricket, dominoes and other activities on November 9 at the Albion Sports Complex with the softball culminating under lights. A feature T/20 exhibition cricket match between Universal DVD Berbice Titans and either Trophy Stall or Regal is also on the cards.
The competition will bring together 16 business organisations and will be played on a knockout basis with each team being allowed two guest players.
The event, which is in its fourth year, is aimed at promoting unity and fostering better working relationships between business entities and the public. The day’s activities is expected to offer much thrills and excitement as the organisers have introduced a number of new initiatives to make the activity a truly business, family oriented affair with stereos sounds Paragon international, big screen projectors, cheer leaders, dancers and fireworks set to entertain.
Patrons will also have an opportunity to walk away with gate prizes. Funds raised from the events will go towards charity.
The tournament, which started in 2010 as a friendly game amongst business places, has now grown to become an agenda item on the calendars of the corporate businesses.
The day’s proceedings, which are expected to commence at 09:00hrs, will see Regional Chairman XI battling new comers Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, Nand Persaud Karibee Rice versus Hand In Hand Insurance, Demerara Bank coming up against Banks DIH Ltd, Republic Bank Guyana Ltd meeting Ansa McAl Stag Boyz, Oldendorff Carriers challenge Guyana Power And Light, Metro Office and Computer Supplies playing Neal And Massy, Berbice River Bridge match skills with New Building Society, while Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport is expected to play Global Printing Office (yet to be confirmed) or will draw the bye.
The defending champions Guysuco will not be participating this year and Neal and Massy and Guyana Power and Light occupied the other two top spots.
Meanwhile, Anil Beharry, who chaired the proceedings, urged the participating teams to be properly uniformed. (Samuel Whyte)
