The skills of 32 Region Nine residents were recently enhanced with the successful completion of a 120-contact-hour course in Public Management.
The group graduated on Saturday, marking the first time the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE), extension arm of the University of Guyana, took Public Management to Lethem.
This is according to Ganga Persaud, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, who emphasized that Public Management is actually Government Management. He said most of the graduates are public servants while others are gainfully employed in the private sector.
The Minister said the teachings and certificate would allow the individuals to perform better at their work; be better managers and supervisors; and create the opportunity for promotion.
Providing an insight into the programme, Persaud said the courses were done on weekends starting on Friday evenings. The final exam was done in August and a few students had to rewrite the final exams in September.
He noted that the students financed their own graduation and were required to give back to the Arapaima Primary School, where the classes were held. They designed and constructed a bicycle shed.
Persaud said the lecturers were drawn from the City and quite a number of them were Permanent Secretaries, Deputy Permanent Secretaries and other young qualified professionals. The course cost a little over $10,500 because the facilitators lectured pro bono.
According to Persaud, similar programmes are being done across the country. Currently a programme is being executed in Region Five at the Cotton Tree Primary School on Saturdays. To be part of the programme, the applicants must either be part of the public sector or meet the minimum requirement to be admitted to the University of Guyana.
