Dexter Haynes of 86 Durban Street, Werk-en-Rust, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday faced with an assault charge.
It is alleged that on October 18, on Durban Street, Haynes unlawfully assaulted Colin Benjamin causing actual bodily harm.
The defendant pleaded guilty with explanation.
Haynes, who said he is employed as a bus driver for Splashmin’s Resort, attempted to enlighten the court of the situation surrounding the charge.
Haynes stated that on the day in question, Benjamin accused his 17-year-old son of stealing a gold chain and proceeded to thrash the lad. The father explained that in an effort to protect his son, he became involved in the brawl which subsequently led to him being arrested.
The Magistrate then entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
According to the report given by Prosecutor, the ‘cuffs’ which were dealt to Benjamin resulted in contusions to his left side chest and minor abrasions to the right posterior aspect of the chest.
The magistrate thereafter placed Haynes on $100,000 bail and adjourned the matter to October 29.
A summons was issued for the absent Benjamin to be present at the next hearing.
