The Speaker of the Suriname Parliament will be leading a delegation for a three-day visit starting Thursday, 24th. It is the intention to establish a Guyana/Suriname Association aimed at improving relations between the two countries.
The Speaker, Dr. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, along with 11 other officials, will be meeting with President Donald Ramotar, Members of Parliament and representatives of the various committees of that body. According to the Parliament Office of Guyana, the visit of Dr. Geerlings-Simons is in keeping with the commitment made by the previous speaker of the National Assembly, Hari ‘Ralph’ Ramkarran to invite the Speaker of the Surinamese Parliament.
Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman, emphasised that the nature of the visit with key members of the Government and the Opposition should go beyond “merely meeting”. Geerlings-Simon, in addition to meeting with the President, will also be calling on Prime Minister Sam Hinds, Leader of the Opposition, David Granger, and the Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Khemraj Ramjattan.
In addition, the delegation will also meet members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Committee, members of the Parliamentary Management Committee and members of the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations.
The delegation will be taken on tours to the St. George’s Cathedral, Demerara Harbour Bridge, Guyana Heritage Museum and Tuschen Housing Scheme. The team leaves on Saturday.
