Mayor Hamilton Green has been a true sports enthusiast since time eternal and during his tenure as Prime Minister, had contributed greatly to the local physical and infrastructural sports fraternity. He is now the Major of Georgetown and for over 32 years, former national football coach, Lennox Arthur has paid homage to those contributions through the successful staging of the Mayor’s Cup Football tournament.
‘Hammy,’ as many has fondly come to know him, will be celebrating his 79thbirth anniversary on Saturday November 9 next and Mr Arthur will continue to pay homage to him with an Inter Ward, Village Street 7 a-side, one day football championship at the Tucville Ground, on Sunday November 10.
Mr Arthur has been the man behind the yearly Mayor’s Cup football tournament which has seen the leading local teams battling for top honours, while carting off millions of dollars in cash and other lucrative prizes. He has promised similar excitement and said that more that 16 teams have already registered for participation with another 10 teams scheduled to register over the coming weeks.
The organizer said that power teams such as Alberttown, South Sophia, Tiger Bay, Kitty and North Ruimveldt have already conformed to the registration process while several teams from the East and West Coast Demerara have signalled their intentions to participate and will register during the coming week.
The winning and runner up teams will both receive beautiful trophies but the first place team will win $100,000 while the team finishing second will earn half that amount.
Already, the organizers have received the support of Ricks and Sari and each member of the two top teams will receive large food hampers of Ricks and Sari Products.
Other sponsors on board so far are McCorp, GT&T, Chris Fernandes, Winston Rambarran and the Guyana Lotto Company. Mr Arthur is appealing to the business community for support towards the success of this historic tournament.
