Improvements along the Soesdyke Linden Highway are expected to commence shortly with repairs to the surface of the roadway and bridges and installation of street lights.
Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon at his post-Cabinet press briefing on Thursday said Cabinet gave its no-objection to the award of contracts to improve the structure, which was constructed from 1966 to 1968 and has therefore been in use for 45 years.
According to Dr. Luncheon, rehabilitation of sections of the Soesdyke Linden Highway covering Regions Four and Ten is expected to commence shortly to tune of $67.9M. Meanwhile, in September last Cabinet also gave its no-objection to the rehabilitation of several sections of the highway to the tune of $57.5M.
He stated that a contract for carrying out emergency repairs to five log bridges along the highway was also approved. Those works would be done to the tune of $16.439M. Sections of the stretch would also be illuminated with the installation of street lights.
The street lights installation is part of an initiative to illuminate the Abary Bridge and from Number 44 to Number 52 Villages along the Corentyne. The aggregate total for the street light contracts is $31.5M.
