The second edition of the Digicel Cancer Awareness Cycle Road Race which is held in association with the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) and Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) is set for Sunday October 27 and will be much bigger than last year.
While it is another cycling event that attracted close to 100 riders last year, it is much more significant given the fact that it is held to heighten the awareness of breast cancer.
Kaieteur Sport posed a number of pertinent questions to Digicel’s Sponsorship and Events Manager, Gavin Hope in relation to this significant and much anticipated event which will see the biggest prize monies ever, being handed out.
KN – How do you view this road race held in observance of Cancer and its relevance to the Cancer awareness campaign?
GH – It is another way of getting people who are not normally involved in these awareness campaigns, to show that they too are publically aware and it is encouraging others to be aware that Cancer is real. We chose cycling as this is another form of physical exercise and while not just creating awareness of Breast Cancer, we are also encouraging maintenance of good health, through physical exercise. Cycling is predominately a male sport and using them to ride for the cause, is showing that males also support the need for awareness.
KN – This is the biggest activity sports wise that has a direct link to Cancer awareness, what is your take on this from a corporate standpoint?
GH – Digicel will continue to support health and health awareness. While this is a major sporting activity, which saw almost one hundred cyclist’s turning out to support the cause last year, it is also about bringing families and friends together. Each participant will be asked to make a donation which will be matched by Digicel and in turn, donated to the Cancer Society of Guyana. So it is not just Digicel having a race, but getting everyone involved in support of the cause for awareness and contributing to hopefully finding a cure in the near future.
KN – Why the heavy emphasis on Cancer awareness?
GH – Cancer has been around for ages, and to date, there has been no cure. Almost everyone would have known or knows someone with Cancer. And it’s frightening. While this month is Breast Cancer awareness month, it takes on worldwide emphasis not just for those living with this illness but for those who are not aware that it exists, and can affect anyone of us. Digicel has been involved in many awareness drives from its inception. We have partnered with Lifeline Counseling and Hope Foundation (Bartica) for the continued education and awareness campaigns in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
KN – What would have prompted the increase in prize monies and other incentives and the change in route?
GH – The increase in incentives is to encourage more participants to come out with their friends and families, not only to support the cyclists, but supporting the cause.
We wanted to make the event more challenging thus the route change which would have been carefully thought out. We are starting in Linden and riding all the way to Georgetown. Also, last year we raced around the outer circuit of the National Park; and with one of our main objectives being to spread awareness to as many persons as possible, we thought it was a good idea to get more people involved along the route from Linden, East Bank and the Georgetown communities.
KN – A general comment on Digicel’s continued partnership/support of and for sports in Guyana.
GH – We are dedicated to seeing our youths develop and achieve their goals and dreams, and sport’s is one way of making this happen. It is also a good avenue in getting our children engaged in physical activities as sports is healthy. And by promoting sports, we are also promoting good health, and healthy living.
KN – Are you aiming to make this event the biggest on the cycling calendar?
GH – Everything Digicel does is done with the aim of achieving the highest standards. Not sure that this will become the biggest event on the cycling calendar, but it must be an event that has a positive impact on the people of Guyana because of the main objective: “To heighten awareness of Breast Cancer and Cancer” in general.
