After almost two years of construction work, a magnificent Mandir now stands tall in the Region Three community of La Jalousie Estate, West Coast Demerara.
The structure, which exudes sophistication and elegance, is arguably one of a kind and perhaps even has the potential of becoming a historic site.
And it was just this that its creators had in mind when they first envisaged it.
Previously a smaller, less enthralling structure stood in its place, but according to the architect of the now eye-catching place of worship, Rampersaud Sukdeo, the intent was to have a Mandir that would remain for generations to come.
According to Sukdeo, who has been a member of the La Jalousie Estate Uma.. Maheshwar Mandir for almost two decades, “I told my colleagues that we are getting old and we should build something that would last, because we don’t know if the generation to come would be able to rebuild a Mandir again.”
This, he disclosed, saw the members of the Mandir collaborating with a view of creating a place of worship that would “last a lifetime.”
It therefore saw ideas being shared, which in fact was characterised by viewing pictures of several Mandirs, which understandably fuelled their imagination, thereby allowing Sukdeo to design the intricate structure. “We took pieces from various pictures of Mandirs and then put them together to form our own,” said Sukdeo.
The finished product, according to him, is currently valued at several million dollars, all of which were generated by community members, save three individuals from overseas who wanted to contribute to the project as well.
Currently the Mandir has a membership of about 100 members, and according to Sukdeo, “the people in this village do things in a very cooperative way.”
Yesterday the Mandir was a buzz of activities as the placement of the Murti was being undertaken and the structure was being blessed as part of a ceremonial function.
Meanwhile, there are plans for a Yajna (ritual of offerings) set for November 6-10, marking the official launch of the new Mandir which the members are only too proud to display.
Pandit Krishna Patiram has been officiating at the Mandir since its inception.
