West Indies, on the back of a carefully constructed fifty from Tagenarine Chanderpaul and incisive fast bowling from Preston McSween (4-20) and Ray Jordon (2-30), beat Bangladesh by 67 runs in the 5th under-19 ODI last night under lights at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
Chanderpaul struck eight fours and a six in his 51 and got support from fellow Guyanese Shemron Hetymer (29) as the hosts were dismissed for 177.
Man-of-the-Match McSween and the lively Jordon then reduced the visitors to 35-4 before they eventually fell for 110 despite 49 from Sadman Anik as the West Indies kept the series alive by reducing the lead to 3-2.
West Indies won the toss and elected to bat and lost Leroy Lugg off the first ball of the match when he top-edged a pull to the Keeper off Prodhan Rifat.
Hetymer joined Chanderpaul and got going with an array of glorious shots. The Berbice batsman drove Abu Saeed for three exquisite cover driven boundaries before thumping Rifat down the ground and over mid-on for two more boundaries.
But Rifat soon induced Hetymer, who hit six fours in a cameo 29, to slash a ball to point to leave the home team on 36-2.
Tristian Coleman and Chanderpaul who played the supporting role, carried the score to 79 with a valuable 43-run partnership before Coleman (21) was unfortunate to be given out hit wicket to Javed Rahutul when replays showed the keeper’s pad had hit the wicket.
Tarryck Gabriel (6) was bowled by Rahutul at 103-4 but Chanderpaul, who accelerated from a slow start, added 43 with Nicholas Pooran (23) before both batsmen departed with the score on 145.
Chanderpaul, who played four first class matches last year, reached his fifty from 88 balls with eight fours and a six before he pulled a ball from off-spinner Mossadek Saikat to mid-on.
Pooran then swept leg-spinner Likhon Zubair to short fine-leg as the West Indies encountered a stutter. Only Fabian Allen (15) of the remaining batsmen reached double figures on a track which kept low from the second ball of the match.
Zubair, who had a hat-trick in the last match at Providence, finished with 4-19, while Rifat and Saikat collected two wickets each.
When the visitors, who have won every game in this series since the West Indies won the opening ODI at Providence, began their reply, they had to contend with another hostile spell from Vincentian Ray Jordon on a docile straw colored pitch.
Jordon, who peppered the batsmen with some quick bouncers, removed Munim Jummon (7) and Saikat (3) to catches to the Keeper Pooran, while fellow opening bowler Grenadian left-armer Preston McSween got rid of the inform Uddin Jashim (2) and Shanto for a duck as Bangladesh slipped to 35-4.
Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai struck at 55-5 when he trapped Mehedi Miraj (16) in the 18th over to give the home team hopes of successfully defending their small total.
Abu Saeed was LBW to Gabriel for six at 89-7 before Rifat was run out for five at 102-8, while Anik, who batted for 39 overs for his 49, was brilliantly stumped off a leg-side wide at 109-9 and Zubair was taken at cover off McSween for a duck to finish the game.
The action switches to Albion in Berbice on Saturday for the penultimate ODI.
