The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) will re-advertise for the salvaging of capsized cargo vessel Miss Elliza which is now grounded in the middle of Demerara River, 17 months after it overturned with the cook still trapped inside. MARAD said that the first tender saw no takers, so the process will be done again.
Miss Elliza capsized shortly after leaving the Muneshwer Wharf last year June. The 65-foot boat was said to have been overloaded with goods destined for Trinidad and Tobago.
MARAD’s Harbour Master Volton Skeete told Kaieteur News that Miss Elliza is currently in a fixed position having drifted a short distance from where it had initially turned over. He said that the agency accepts and takes responsibility for all wrecks. It thus advertised for the boat to be raised, but no one has come forward; the agency itself is in no position to salvage the wreck.
Currently, he said, Miss Elliza has been marked to alert passing ships and small vessels about its location. In mid-June last year, the boat’s owner, Fijai Sankar, told Kaieteur News that a Trinidadian team would have visited the wreck to ascertain the prospects of salvaging the boat.
According to Sankar, saving the boat had been estimated at several millions of dollars, money which he and the government said they did not have.
On the other hand, the body of 68-year-old Gerald Fraser has not been recovered. The man is assumed dead, while his body is trapped in the overturned vessel. His workmates said that the boat had left the Muneshwer’s wharf headed to Trinidad, but was returning to port since the cargo on the boat shifted and unbalanced the vessel.
The Captain, Justin Bino, had told reporters that it was during the turn back to the Wharf that the boat started to tilt heavily on the starboard side, “before capsizing within minutes.”
The seamen said that they started to abandon ship but the cook allegedly returned within the boat for a bag. Several members were rescued due to quick action by speedboat operators working the Demerara ships channel within the Port Georgetown Harbour.
The cook’s family has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the boat owner.
