The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) eight-member team to the 2013 edition of the Caribbean Cycling Championships (CCC) will wheel out on Friday for the Island of Curacao where they will come up against the best riders in these parts, battling for supremacy on Saturday and Sunday.
Coach Dwayne Gibbs speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday said that preparations have concluded and it was mainly focused on the mental preparedness of his charges for battle.
Gibbs, a former standout at the national and regional level, said that the team members have been riding consistently throughout the year so competition fitness wasn’t an issue.
“Our training went well and I would say it was successful. I focused on the weak points of the riders which were their mental preparedness for what will be tough competition. We have got to learn and prepare to think under pressure and that was our main area of focus.”
He noted that the team is not short of talent but would like his charges learning the art of reacting positively under pressure and not wilting.
The male team comprises of Geron Williams, Godfrey Pollydore, Alonzo Greaves, Orville Hinds and National Road Race king Raynauth Jeffrey, while the females are United Kingdom based Claire Fraser-Green, National Road Race queen Naomi Singh and Hazina Barrett.
The Individual Time Trails, which will be contested on Saturday, will see the male riders covering the route twice totaling 40km, while the women will do 20km, one lap.
On Sunday, the Road Race will take centre stage starting and finishing at Schottegatweg Oost, outside of the city. The circuit is 7.1km and will see the men covering a distance of 128km (80miles) or 18 laps, while the women will cover 71km (45 miles) which is 10 laps around the circuit.
Manager of the team Brian Allen disclosed that they have been encountering some challenges with sending the cycles ahead to Curacao as they were advised to do by the LIAT authorities.
“We were advised by LIAT to send the cycles up front to avoid any complications on the Trinidad to Curacao leg. But after delivering bikes to LIAT on Tuesday we were informed late Tuesday evening that the flight scheduled to take the cycles had been cancelled because of some problems with the aircraft, and we should make arrangements to collect the bikes from the airport.”
Allen further disclosed that LIAT has now promised that the cycles, which they will have to pay US$80 for each, will be given priority when the team wings out tomorrow via Trinidad for Curacao.
They will not get into Curacao until 16:05 tomorrow afternoon with the Technical Meeting set for tomorrow evening also. The competition will be held under the COPACI and Caribbean Federation rules. (Franklin Wilson)
